Rocky the Otterhound: Rocky to the Rescue

This week our Rocky is a hero! He has ventured out and found an abandoned orphan who would have died without his help.

Rocky pulled on his lead while out (something he rarely does) and would not be dissuaded from the path he wanted to take ............... he led me straight to this slow, wobbly little might.

Harry the hedgehog (yes its a boy, I checked) was cold and dehydrated, his mummy is probably hibernating and the last litter of the year left to fend for itself. This is common with hedgehogs, but this little fellow was lucky! Rocky wasn't keen on letting him die.

Little Harry was only 6oz in weight and would not have survived the winter, or hibernation.

So we gave him some puppy food, Rocky gave him lots of love and kisses, and took him to our local wildlife hospital. Where he would be hydrated, kept warm and safe and released next spring!

Well done Rocky!!

We knew Rocky was going to grow up to be a large dog ...................... we now know he is going to be one of lifes gentle giants!! That's my boy!!

This week we have also had some wonderful bright sunny days with hard Hore Frost, beautifully cold and bright! Rocky has therefore been introduced to frozen grass .................... have you ever seen a playful baby horse?? All legs and bouncing about like a crazy thing!
Yep, that was Rocky; he jumped in the air (a lot), twirled around (a lot), tried to bite the grass (a lot) and ran like a thing posessed. He had such fun and, apart from the effort of us oldies trying to keep up with him, so did we. We really hope we get snow this winter, he'll go nuts!! I want to have a snowball fight with him .......... fingers crossed!

Rocky has been very busy this week and as a result has been very tired at times.

It was my week for cleaning windows, especially the patio doors which were covered in muddy nose prints (inside and out). Rocky found this work fascinating, and thought he'd lend a hand.

Everywhere the cloth went (within reach) rocky's nose followed, so I went over it again ................. and so did rocky! Not to be beaten I then decided to wipe with a dry cloth immediately I had gone across an area (before his helpfulness got a look in)! Rocky was so impressed by the clean clear glass he proceeded to wash it himself again, with big doggy licks!! Ah well, at least they're not muddy anymore!
The cold war between Rocky and Biskitt continues, although there have been episodes where they have got reasonably cose to each other ...................

The rules are still the same, she can go where she wants and look as much as she can, poor Rocky on the other hand can stay as long as he doesn't make eye contact. If he should it'd be the hissy fit and paws of claws ........................ he doesn't seem to mind anymore though but I think he gets confused by the whole issue as everyone elso loves him??!!

Lastly, Rocky had a small set back this week which was entirely my fault. Being so keen to socialise him to everything ................... I'd forgotten about the humble lamp post. Whilst out on a walk Rocky decided to go one way round the post while I went the other. Suddenly realising something was wrong when the lead went tight and he could go no further he started to panic. No amount of cajoling would bring him back round the post so I started to follow him.

Big mistake!!! As I turned and travelled round to him, he became concerned that I was going away so pulled forward to follow me. The result was both he and I walking round and round this lamppost like a pair of numpty's! Thank goodness it was dark as we must have looked very odd! Rocky began to get concerned, his ears went down and he started to wimper .................. psychological trauma was averted though as I burst out laughing, his ears went back up, he smiled and relaxed. Eventually after several hand swaps of the lead and managing to move faster than he, we were out of the roundabout and back on our way!

So, any puppy owners out there .................... don't dismiss the importance of good lamppost training!
