Rocky the Otterhound: Playing hero's and explorers!

Rocky and Rosie's next installment on their "experiment in freedom" has been put on hold for a little while, due to circumstances, weather conditions and taking a little time to get The Hobbit road legal. So this weeks blog is about a cold but enjoyable walk down by the river and through the water meadows. Like all of their walks, it is possible to go to the same place as before but have a different experience, especially if you are young and life is full of fun.

It all began innocently enough ....... Down the track to the walkway alongside the river.

Their attention was on the smells and sights of woodland and river.

But Rocky had suddenly decided that the scents he wanted to tickle his bones with would be nearer the river, so ........

..... "what do you think Rosie, shall we go off track and do some riverside scenting"? "We could play explorers in the jungle ..... A jungle full of dangerous creatures, and we have to find our way out without getting eaten"!

"Err, Ok Rocky, whatever you say"!

So Riverside scenting and playing it was.

Rosie, feeling the cold a little more than Rocky, tried to keep her attention more to the landward side of the river.

She even managed to find a few scents interesting enough to get Rocky snuffling too!

But Rosie could tell by the way he kept going back towards the river, that it wouldn't be long before Rocky got his toes wet!

And she was right, of course, paddling through the watery weeds Rocky was having a great time!

"You really ought to try here Rosie, the scents are delicious and very tickly"!

Rosie tried them .........

"No, I've got to get out Rocky ...... My toes are too cold"! Poor Rosie!

Still, soon enough Rocky seemed to agree with her, and it was back to dry land ........ moving forward and enjoying everything about this cold but beautiful day!

"Oooh, there's swans over there ...... That must mean lovely scents around the water ...... Oh, just one more paddle then"!

So Rocky got stuck in one more time .... All for the tickling of the scenting bones!

Even Rosie got persuaded to go in again ....

"Hey ... Wait a minute ...... Why has everything gone blue"?

"Err, I'm not sure Rosie, I think the camera is playing up again"!!

"Oh OK, as long as I'm not going to turn blue too"!

Past the river and over the bridge, we head back via the water meadows. Rocky catches something on the wind .........

........ "Hey up chaps ...... There's something going on"!!

"He's right you know ...... I can smell it too"!

"Something to do with those sheep over there".

"What sheep Rocky ...... Oh those sheep"!

"Err, they seem to be moving this way ..... I'm off ...... See you later Rocky"!!!

"Hmmm, they do seem to be heading this way, and there are a lot of them" ........

"Actually, an awful lot of them ...... And they are moving quite fast ....... Wait for me Rosie"!!

Our two brave Otterhounds pulled (quite successfully) in a general 'away' direction!

"Are they following us"?

"I'll just take a quick peek".

"Well Rosie, can you see them"?

"Yes, but they don't seem to be getting any closer"!

'No, you're right" ........

"Dangerous things sheep"!

"But we obviously frightened them into staying behind us ......."!!!???

So we, and our two intrepid explorers, carried on.

"Oh look, more swans ....... They look bigger close up, don't they Rocky"?

"Mmm yes; you see Rosie, like sheep ..... In fact like any white animal ...... you have to watch them ...... They'll creep up on you if they can ....... and you don't want that"!!!!

"Oh no, I don't want that"!

"Actually Rocky, why don't I want that"?

"Well, err ...... Because they can eat you and spit out the bones of course"!!!!!!

Rosie was glad she had her back to the trees and her feet on the ground ...... "Well I certainly will steer clear of white animals in the future"!

"Rocky, can we play a girly game next time please"?

Back home and Rosie was tired and sleepy .... Night night Rosie ......

Rocky, on the other hand took a little time to savour his heroism against the white enemies of the water meadows!

But of course, before too much time had passed he had made his way to his comfy sofa .....

Cuddled up to his warm and comfy little sister and .....

Well ....... Night night Rocky ..... sleep well and dream of being the hero in your own happy world!

oh ! hahaha! those are some great pictures! especially the swans!!! so, are otterhounds scent hounds then? i thought they were sight hounds like the wolfhounds. i love how your blog post are always such fun adventures and then end up with the two of them on the sofa. hahaha! giant hounds LOVE the comforts of home that is for sure.

do you have any videos of them baying? there is slim pickings on youtube for otterhound videos--i would absolutely love to see/hear them if you ever get the chance. If you check out my blog tomorrow, Guinness attacts a porcupine--and he didn't win...til next time!!!
