Rocky the Otterhound: Otterhounds are not hot weather dogs!

We have had some glorious weather lately, but while we have enjoyed the heat and sunshine our hounds have preferred to stay indoors in the cool!

They have a thick double coat and, apart from his eyes, nose and pads, Rocky is completely covered in it!

Our hounds quite like the weather but tend to seek out the shade ........... where they have been particularly inactive this week ......... Preferring to sleep the day away!!

Enough of this lazy hound dog behaviour I thought!

Lets go for a walk .......... I carefully chose the route, to give them as much shade as possible ......

....... So we went down to the river via the woods. What a lovely idea!

Every so often the track had a path which led to the rivers edge ........ Has to be explored you know!

Thinking a cool paddle would do them good I tried every trick in the book to get them to paddle ...........

....... Absolutely no luck at all with this idea!!!

Still, at least the trees met with their approval!

Just before we crossed the river we came to a wide open space and our Rocky got all excited ......

....... So much so that he just went straight into the river!!

What could have caused this unusual behaviour?

Has Rocky finally decided he likes water?

No!!!! It was simply a chance to play with his friend Honey!

Ah well, at least he cooled his feet down!

Meanwhile, Rosie was getting a little perturbed .........

....... "Rocky! Get out quick!! You're in the wet stuff"!!!!

"It's not so bad Rosie, you can even play with sticks in here ....... Come on in and give it a try"!!

It was no good, even with Rocky, Honey and myself trying to coax her in ........ Rosie stayed resolutely dry!!

Sigh, makes you wonder why some Otterhounds bother with the quick drying coat and webbed feet?!!

Still, Rosie was enjoying the walk in her own way ......... and when I decided to head for home via the water meadows they were both very pleased!

Rocky was a little perturbed however, when I decided to sit on the bank and have a drink!

"I say, what's going on? Oh do come on ........ There are loads of smells for my scenting bones here"!!!!!

I stayed where I was and with a resigned sigh Rocky came and sat next to me ....... Surveying the water meadows.

He and Rosie were contented for a while but eventually Rocky good-naturedly pressed to continue on .......

....."Come on old woman! Let's see what lovely smells are around"!

So we set off again and our two hounds had their noses firmly to the ground.

Although Rocky now ignores sheep (they don't do anything interesting), Rosie is young enough to remain curious ........ for a short time at least ....... Until they get boring that is!!

We continued to follow the path towards home.

Typically Otterhound .......... Rosie became a little perturbed by the broken bridge as she hadn't seen it from this angle before!!!

Reassurance, and Rocky's ease with it, managed to get her over that one!!

Nearing the end of our trek the grass got longer and dashing in and out of it (for the pleasure of it you understand) enabled Rocky and Rosie to collect lots of grass seeds .....

Goody!? ...... They'll need a grooming when they get home then!!!

They didn't seem to care ........ They were having loads of fun!

A short stop on the Old Mill bridge to watch the water going over the weir before going home........

"How come this wet stuff is so noisy Rocky"?

"It's obvious Rosie ...... The wet stuff's excited ....... You Know, like you get sometimes"?

"Oh yes, I know what you mean"!

It's so important to get your information right when teaching young ones; don't you think??!

Another day we were able to re-animate our hounds by bringing the weekly shop home!

"Oooh, what's this .... Rocky smell that ....... Oooh look at this ......... I can smell something lovely, it's got to be for us"!!!!

After Rosie had found her "mega-chew" Rocky thought he would just have to dive in and find one for himself ......

But, because he kept getting side tracked by other lovely things, "daddy" gave up waiting and handed him his treat for this week

"Oooh scrummy"!!!!

Rocky likes to eat at the table!!!

But sometimes his food just slips about and he can't get going ........

So, noticing that Rosie had managed to happily chew nearly all of hers ........

........ Rocky decided to eat like an Otterhound ....... "Yum Yum"!!

Although some of the night times have been rather hot and sticky and even we have had trouble sleeping ...... It's still nice to cuddle up to a friend!

And Rocky? ........... Well Rocky can sleep through anything, any time ........ It;s one of his most favourite things .........

Night night Rocky ........

Sleep well and dream of cool wet stuff and leafy woods!!!
